DIGNITY VILLAGE
9325 NE Sunderland Ave. (off of NE 33rd Ave near NE Marine Drive)
In December 2000, a group of homeless individuals decided to do something to get themselves out of the doorways. They set up five tents on public land, and Dignity Village was born. Through hard work, determination, public support, and resourcefulness, Dignity Village has grown and thrived to be a self-governing village that houses formerly homeless people with the city’s approval. The residents build their own shelters and take part in the village decisions. Dignity is currently in the process of moving on to a new phase by establishing a perma-site based on their on-going model. In its current location, Dignity Village makes use of environmentally-friendly materials such as strawbale housing, and uses wind-generated electricity. Dignity Village serves as a unique model of one solution for homelessness, and is one of the oldest on-going homeless villages in the country. It has gained interest from homeless advocates from around the world. Visitors are welcome to drop by.
