Los Gorditos

There are times when even I’m down on Portland, or get pessimistic about the Rose City’s supposed “specialness”. Then there are the times when I feel that Portland is the greatest city in the world, and unique things, perhaps unexplainable things, happen in this rarefied environment that couldn’t happen anywhere else on the planet. Los Gorditos is an example of the latter. Now you may ask yourself, “How can you say this about just a taco truck?” Well friends, Los Gorditos is a taco truck like no other, a taco truck that I feel couldn’t exist outside of this area. Sure, there are plenty of authentic tacquerias even in Portland. But where else can you find an authentic taco truck that has honest-to-goodness delicious VEGAN OPTIONS? Yes, that’s right. Vegan options. You can get a burrito with soy cheese, sour cream, tofu, and soyriso if you wanted to! Couple this with their great food in general and super-friendly service (Gorditos is a family run operation) and you’ll understand why sometimes you’ll have to wait 30 minutes for your order. (You can try to call it in in advance, but it’s hit-and-miss if they’ll actually pick up the phone during a busy rush.) There are of course those obstinate Nor’Easters (and North Portlandites) who can’t believe there’s decent Mexican south of I-84 but it’s their loss. And to sweeten the deal, Gorditos has opened a SECOND taco truck next to Citybikes Annex that is 100% VEGAN!

God, how I love Portland.
