Clinton St. Theater
Opening in 1915, the Clinton is the oldest operating theater in Portland, one of the oldest in existence in the US, and possibly the oldest continuously operating theater west of the Mississippi. And the Clinton has had the Rocky Horror Picture Show playing every Saturday night for almost thirty years! One thing, though, is the Clinton couldn’t make up it’s mind on what it wanted to be called. Originally the Clinton, it changed to the less-distinctive 26th Avenue Theatre in 1945, then to the not-much-better Encore in 1969. Finally in 1976 it reverted back to the name we know and love. The Clinton has made its name in recent years for showing arthouse films and having interesting themed movie fests, like Stag Film Festival and Dog Day, most notably. (the latter inviting dogs to watch movies like Rin Tin Tin, Tippy the Wonder-Pup and more!) Now the Clinton has an adjoining brewpub (the smallest in Portland) so you can enjoy some fine beer with your movie! The outside of the Clinton is a bit deceiving, as the building itself is non-descript and the Clinton lacks the spectacular marquee setup that some other PDX cinemas enjoy. But once inside it’s pure movie magic!
