In searching for an ideal breakfast spot, nothing makes me happier than the words “Breakfast Served All Day”. Because sometimes I just can’t make it by 11 am, and sometimes I feel like having breakfast at times that are not during the morning. Fat City serves up some good breakfast (and lunch even!) but what makes this place great is character. On the surface, there’s Detritus Americana covering every inch of the walls (I counted three license plates from my home state, plus earlier Portland street signs that satisfy my Portland history nerdiness). Besides that, Fat City is most famous (or infamous) as the spot that former Mayor Bud Clark (whoop whoop!) fired Police Chief Whatshisface back in the ‘80s. (A plaque commemorates the booth where the deed took place.) And the owner used to sing in an all-girl punk band from Reno back in the day, playing with the likes of 7 Seconds, Black Flag, and D.O.A. Soak that all in while you wait for your omelette!
